Alongside our gothic scheme of learning in the spring term, on Thursday 5th January we will be hosting our annual year 8 Gothic Day. The purpose of the day is to deepen our studentsā€™ understanding of the conventions of the genre whilst fostering a love of literature.
On the day, students will be off timetable and participating in bespoke workshops led by the English Department.

Students are invited to wear gothic character costumes and we will be awarding prizes to the best dressed students. Your childā€™s English teacher will discuss costume ideas in lessons, but it is not necessary to buy costumes, or spend a lot of money on materials. In previous years the most impressive costumes have been homemade using everyday household items. Those not wishing to wear a costume must wear their school uniform.

In addition to the workshops, we will also be offering an excursion to Bodmin Jail later in the term. Letters with the trip information will be handed out nearer the time.
Finally, there will be a house competition launched on 5th January where students will be able to enter pieces of gothic writing, poems and film trailers and receive house points simply for entering a piece of work. Posters will be displayed around the school and on Google Classroom advertising this.

Please encourage your child to immerse themselves in the opportunities on offer next term; it is a hugely rewarding experience that past students still talk fondly about.
